In 1702, Reverend John Hale first printed his historic eyewitness account of the hysteria of 1692. Though overshadowed by the works of Cotton Mather, Reverend Hale's account is free of the trappings of ambition. Just a heartfelt reverend reflecting on the mistakes made in the taking of innocent lives. In 1992, The Beverly Historical Society (now Historic Beverly) published a reprint of his work, along with an introduction by way of a biography of his life. That work was titled John Hale: A Man Beset By Witches. Our tour name is done in honor of Reverend John Hale, and the continued diligent work done by Historic Beverly in preserving not just his home, but an original copy of his book among many other things.
